How to Dress Like a Cowboy When You Live in a City
Every day of every month at GQ, we start your morning on Instagram with visual advice on What to Wear Today. But we want to go deeper. Give you the nuts and bolts of how to get the look into your wardrobe. Today we're walking you through Michael Keaton’s modern-take on cowboy style—perfect for the city man or anyone who doesn’t actually live on a ranch.
Double denim is dangerous territory—no one wants to look like a tired version of the Marlboro Man—but done right, it’s a damn good look. All-American, rugged, a little bit dangerous, and incredibly comfortable, there’s a reason why we just won’t let the combo die. And you shouldn’t either. To make it look as chill as Michael Keaton here, observe these three double-denim rules.
A subtle variation in washes will help the jacket or shirt and jeans look right together but not so right that they look like a matching set. (Think: Justin Timberlake in that denim tudo circa 2001.) If matching washes ever works, it’s when the denim is super dark—still, proceed with caution.
Keaton’s white T-shirt and flannel are a simple way to make the whole double-denim thing less intense. If you’re wearing a denim shirt, try adding a non-denim jacket or good sweater overtop instead. If it’s 90-degress outside and those aren’t options, consider not wearing head-to-toe denim in the first place.
Resist the urge to add aviators, tan steel-toe boots, and a brimmed hat to complete the look—you’ll literally look like a rand hand. Black boots and a piece of edgy jewelry will mix up the vibe in just the right way. Got a nice watch? It’ll come in handy here.
